I agree with Japheth that we should protect our country, family and friends. However, I believe that we do not need to be soldiers in order to protect these things, and that if one really wants to, he can bring about a difference, no matter how old he is or whatever resources he possesses.
I agree with you that protecting these things are important and, to an extent, necessary.
All the things that are mentioned in your post are things that are important to us. Also, they are things that have offered us protection, shelter, and opportunities. I feel that we should protect and defend them as gratitude for their help in our lives.
